The collection includes reports, correspondence, memoranda, research papers, transcripts of meetings and conferences, financila records, and clippings. Over half the material relates directly to the activities of the Panel and the preparation of the final report. Series 4, the files of Norris Houghton (president of the Council 1974-1976), may present the fullest overview of the Council's policies and activities.

The Arts, Education and Americans Panel (1974-1977), chaired by David Rockefeller, Jr., was the culmination of the work of the American Council for the Arts in Education (ACAE). Established in 1972 as the successor to the National Council for the Arts in Education, the ACAE was designed to promote the arts as an integral part of school curricula at all levels of education.
